The consequences of incarceration do not stop at the prison gate. They radiate outward โ into homes, schools, and the psychology of children who wake up one morning and find a parent missing.
Research from the University of Lagos estimates that for every adult incarcerated in Nigeria, an average of 3.2 dependents are directly affected. Children of incarcerated parents are significantly more likely to experience food insecurity, drop out of school, and โ in a painful cycle โ become involved in the criminal justice system themselves.
Our family reconnection program works on both sides of the wall. Inside, we help inmates maintain contact with their children through structured letter-writing, recorded video messages, and family counseling sessions. Outside, we provide practical support to caregivers โ connecting them with food assistance, school fee support, and psychosocial counseling.
“My children thought their father had abandoned them,” says Blessing, whose husband has been detained for two years. “When they received his letter โ his real words, his handwriting โ my son touched the paper and would not let go.”
Breaking the cycle of incarceration starts with keeping families together, even across walls.
