Inside a prison, a paintbrush can be as transformative as a textbook.
Our Arts Program runs weekly sessions in creative writing, visual art, drama, and music inside partner correctional facilities. Led by professional artists who volunteer their time, the program offers inmates a structured space for expression, processing, and discovery.
โ Visual art (painting, drawing, sculpture from available materials)
โ Creative writing and journaling workshops
โ Drama and performance therapy
โ Music (percussion, vocals, songwriting)
โ Annual exhibition of inmate artwork (open to the public)
The impact goes beyond creativity. Participants report reduced anxiety, improved self-esteem, greater empathy, and a strengthened sense of identity and purpose.
Every year, we host the 1805 Prison Arts Exhibition โ an open public show featuring work created entirely by inmates. Last year’s exhibition was attended by over 400 members of the public and raised โฆ2.3 million for our programs.
Art reminds us โ and them โ that they are fully human.
